Notes: Study Canadian history from the perspective of its trade-oriented economy. Course topics include the hotly debated trade issues confronting 19th and 20th century Canadian politics and society. Students will examine how US Canadian economic integration, finances and trade tightened after WWI, and analyze the means by which natural resources, defence production, and trade diplomacy changed Canadian political discourse. Of special relevance will be discussions around Canada+s `traditions+ of economic nationalism, infant industry protection, British preference and, finally, free trade policy which emerged in contexts of crises, prosperity, and globalization. NOTE: All are welcome: Pre-requisites for this course have been waived. |
