Areas of Concentration

The following applies only to history majors who entered the program before the Fall 2015 semester (if you entered the program in the Fall 2015 semester or later, see the calendar description of the program requirements). Other courses may also count toward your areas of concentration. Consult with the undergraduate program advisor (Mrs. Sarah Stevenson, sajsteve@ucalgary.ca) or the undergraduate committee chair (Dr. Paul Chastko, pchastko@ucalgary.ca) regarding other courses.

You must take a total of at least 7 FCE in History to complete your degree as a History Major, of which 3FCE must be in a primary area of concentration and 1.5 FCE in a secondary area of concentration.
During the first year of your degree you should aim to take the 1 FCE at the 200-level required for completion of your degree, of which at least 0.5 FCE should be from your primary area of concentration (or 1 FCE if Canada is your primary concentration).
During your second and third years you should aim to take at least 1 FCE at the 300-level and 1 FCE at the 400-level in your primary concentration, and at least 0.5 FCE at the 300-level, and 0.5 FCE at the 400-level in your secondary area of concentration

* Denotes courses that appear in more than one area of concentration. Students can only apply these courses to one area of concentration.  HTST 211 and HTST 213 are required for all Majors declaring Canadian History as their primary area of concentration.
** This course number covers more than one course.  Please consult MyUofC for further details of courses under these headings.
Courses appearing in the above table are, under normal circumstances, taught at least every year if 200-level and every second year if at the 300-500 level.
Prerequisites for a given course (at least one of those listed) appear in square brackets).
All students entering history in Fall 2012 will be required to take HTST 300 before taking any 500 level course.
