About me

I am a specialist in twentieth-century German history with broad interests in political, social, cultural, and gender history. Along with modern European and German history, I have taught a variety of courses on historiography,  historical methodology, and the history of emotions at the undergraduate and the graduate levels and in the University of Calgary's Arts and Sciences Honours Academy. I was the sole editor of the Journal of the History of Sexuality between 2014 and 2021, and I sit on several editorial boards for book series in German history and cultural studies. I am the author of The Politics of Fertility in Twentieth-Century Berlin (Cambridge University Press, 2010), which explores the history of venereal disease and marriage counselling, and I am the co-author (with Joshua Sanborn) of Gender, Sex, and the Shaping of Modern Europe: A History from the French Revolution to the Present Day, 3rd ed. (Bloomsbury, 2022). I am currently completing work on a monograph about the Nazi Lebensborn program, a network of maternity homes about which sexualized myths have proliferated since its inception in 1935. Aside from my individual research, I have also been engaged in a long-term research and curatorial collaboration with three scholars in Germany and the Netherlands. We are exploring the resonance of German sexology in public discourses about sex, sexuality, and transsexuality in Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States. The most recent product of this collaboration was a jointly authored book: Others of My Kind: Transatlantic Transgender Histories (University of Calgary Press, 2021). This collaboration has also produced four exhibitions, PopSex!, which was staged at the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2011, and TransTrans, which appeared at theNickle Galleries, University of Calgary in 2016, the Schules Museum (Gay Museum) in Berlin in 2019-20, and Amerikahaus in Munich in 2022. Both the original art pieces and the scholarship involved in PopSex! are documented in the co-edited volume Not Straight from Germany: Sexual Publics and Sexual Citizenship Since Magnus Hirschfeld (University of Michigan Press, 2017). Another aspect of my research has involved the history of the Holocaust with a particular focus on sexual violence. In 2019, I published an edited volume about Auschwitz survivor and novelist, Yehiel Dinur (Holocaust History and the Readings of Ka-Tzetnik) and a special issue of the JHS on “Transgressive Sex, Love and Violence in WWII Germany and Britain.” In 2017, I was a co-leader of the Hess Seminar on Gender and Sexuality for early-career professors at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. My work has received several research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the German Academic Exchange Service, and other scholarly departments and agencies.
