| | Elizabeth Jameson | | Outline | | Notes: Race, Film, and History will explore the history of race relations in the United States through the lens of film. This is not a film studies course, but rather a history of how film recorded and reflected social movements for racial equality. It will analyze the representation of race in mainstream Hollywood films, and in films by African Americans and other people of colour. The primary focus will be on films about the African American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and films that reflected changes in race relations and racial identities. The class will meet once a week, Monday from 3-5:45, to allow time for film screenings. Students will analyze film and text representations of key events. Context will be provided by lectures, readings, and film documentaries. | |

| | Frank W. Stahnisch | | Outline | | Notes: This course is a survey of the history of medicine and health care, particularly in Western societies, from antiquity to the present. The aims are (a) to sketch main subject lines pertinent to the evolution of modern medicine in its cultural contexts; (b) to examine the ways in which the body, health and disease were conceptualised; (c) to examine the changing role of "the healer" and "the patient"; (d) to track the evolution of some of the major institutional and societal frameworks of medicine and health care; (e) to analyse the ways in which human societies and their healers interacted in the face of medical challenges. As this course is designed as a 1-year course, ending with the national History of Medicine Days conference, attandance during the full 1-year course is expected (full credit given for the 2 hafl-courses). Intersted students are request to contact Dr. Stahnisch (fwstahni@ucalgary.ca) in addition to the waiting list as further places might be available after Med. Fac. inscriptions. | |

| | Frank W. Stahnisch | | Outline | | Notes: All 500-level Fall term and Winter term History courses are restricted to History majors, ANME majors, and History graduate students until August 14. Few historical analyses and interpretations of Western science and medicine have been more politically and ethically charged than those concerning the nature and implications of the periods of German Imperialism ("Kaiserreich") and National Socialism ("Nationalsozialismus"). In this advanced undergraduate seminar, we will consider the development of science and medicine from the formation of the Wilhelminian Empire to Adolf Hitler's (1889-1945) downfall and the end of the National Socialist Period. This course traces the succession of different cultural and political contexts and analyzes changing patterns of academic self-understanding and morality from the Wilhelminian Empire through the Weimar Republic and the "Third Reich". | |
