	Notes: This course will look at the influence of the discovery, use, and abuse of commodities, such as spices. drinks, drugs, and alcohol on the development of society, cultural institutions, and politics. For example, it will explore the link between coffee and intellectual work thought the connection of the coffee house as a driving force for the Enlightenment. It will focus mostly on Europe but will move into other areas.

This course will be offered next in Winter 2017.
