What can I do with my history degree?

Completing a History degree at the University of Calgary provides you with important experiences, perspectives, and high-demand skills for use in planning your career. History influences the way we think about current events and shapes the way we problem-solve. While most History majors don’t plan to make a career out of history, your History degree provides you with valuable transferable skills sought after by employers, graduate schools, and professional schools. History’s transferable skills include:

  • a broad base of historical knowledge and understanding, especially regarding patterns of continuity and change over time
  • a multicultural and global perspective, including the ability to problem-solve and think creatively
  • the ability to gather, evaluate, and assess large bodies of information, including evidence from contemporary sources
  • the ability to think critically and engage directly with important questions and presenting original and independent opinions
  • effectively communicate their findings to others, both individually and as part of a group, that is clear, concise, effective, and supported by relevant evidence

Perhaps the most important thing your history degree provides you is choice – the choice to pursue a career that you find engaging and rewarding. Past graduates have gone on to careers in business, public service, government, education, and the law; we have also had graduates accepted to graduate programs, law schools, and professional programs across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and beyond. The best part is that you are in control because your history degree is what you make of it.

Some of our graduates tell their stories here. They describe how what they learned in their undergraduate programs has remained invaluable in their professional lives. They describe the wide variety of careers that they have pursued, all of which started with a History degree at the University of Calgary.
