The aims are (a) to sketch main subject lines pertinent to the evolution of modern medicine in its cultural contexts; (b) to examine the ways in which the body, health and disease were conceptualised; (c) to examine the changing role of "the healer" and "the patient"; (d) to track the evolution of some of the major institutional and societal frameworks of medicine and health care; (e) to analyse the ways in which human societies and their healers interacted in the face of medical challenges.
