Biography

Shannon originally hails from Saint Paul, Minnesota. After completing a history B.A. at the University of South Dakota, she moved to Calgary in 2006. Her M.A. was a labor history of a series of strikes in the Minneapolis flour mills that contributed to the breakdown of semi-skilled unions in the early 1900s. She is currently supervised by Dr. Elizabeth Jameson and her major field is American history, her minor field is Canadian history supervised by Dr. Nancy Janovicek, and her cognate field is Sociology supervised by Dr. Tom Langford. Presently, she is working on her dissertation, titled “Making a Modern Metropolis: Boosterism, Reform, and Urban Design in Progressive-Era Minneapolis,” which examines the ways civic leaders and social reformers used urban planning in their efforts to promote and maintain an economically viable and socially healthy city.
