History PhD Student Bafumiki Mocheregwa gives a presentation at the University of Botswana

On 20 November, University of Calgary History PhD candidate Bafumiki Mocheregwa gave a presentation on his current thesis research on the history of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) at the University of Botswana in Gaborone.   Although the Botswana government decided not to form a military upon the country’s independence from Britain in 1966, this decision was reversed in 1977 given threats from conflicts in neighboring countries and the fact that Botswana’s recent diamond mining revenues could pay for the new BDF.  Unlike many militaries in post-colonial Africa, the BDF developed a reputation for professionalism, efficiency and discipline and during the 1990s it deployed contingents as part of several international peace operations such as in Somalia, Mozambique, Rwanda and Lesotho.
