John Woitkowitz to join Cambridge University as research associate

In October 2018, John Woitkowitz will join the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the project Arctic Cultures: Sites of Collection in the Formation of the European and American Northlands. As part of a team led by Dr. Richard C. Powell, he will explore the history of German Arctic science and exploration throughout the nineteenth century. His research will focus on August Heinrich Petermann, a nineteenth-century German cartographer and Arctic enthusiast, and his theories of an open polar sea and a mythical, fertile land beyond the sea ice in the Arctic. John will examine Petermann’s role as an Arctic authority in Germany, Sweden, Britain, Canada, and the United States and analyse how his work helped establish ideas and practices of representing the Arctic in Europe and North America. The Arctic Cultures project is funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant.

John earned his PhD in the History program at the University of Calgary in 2018.
