Latin American Studies Graduates

As a relatively small program, Latin American Studies offers opportunities to interact with faculty members. The Latin American Research Centre sponsors a wide range of supplementary academic programs on Latin America. As a center for research on Latin America, the University of Calgary offers numerous opportunities for students to get involved in academic and extra-curricular activities related to the region.

Since 1999,University of Calgary Latin American Studies graduates have found work throughout Latin America and in Canada and the United States. Many go on to graduate study in disciplines; several have completed advanced degrees at Latin American universities, while others have completed education degrees and now work as Spanish-language teachers in Calgary and Edmonton. Latin American Studies graduates have found work in the oil business, in the non-government sector, and in the financial services industry. Others have gone on to do professional degrees in social work and law.

In response to a 2010 survey, this is what graduates of the Latin American Studies program had to say:

"I don’t think I could say enough about the Latin American Studies Program … and how … [it] shaped me as a person and shaped my career path…. I became fluent in another language, I learned, I traveled, I worked, and it was the most amazing experience of my life.”
- S. C., Latin American Studies Program Graduate, 2005

“LAST opened my eyes ... to the richness and diversity that Mexico, Central and South America is woven from. It also enlightened me to see the various working relationships that Canada has with Latin America and the potential to engage at many levels... I hold LAST in highest regard and am grateful for my experience at U of C.”
C. M., Latin American Studies Program Graduate, 2004
